I often ask myself: ‘Which music suits which instrument?’, rather than asking: ‘Which instrument suits which music?’ I often get the impression that a particular instrument chooses its own music, or indeed that a particular instrument already harbours its own music within it, just waiting to be brought out. Perhaps that is how this programme came about.
Conrad Steinmann
Born in Switzerland in 1951. Studied the recorder at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under Hans-Martin Linde.
In 1972, winner of the 1st International Recorder Competition in Bruges (Belgium).
Resident in Winterthur since 1974. 1975–1982: Taught at the Zurich Academy of Music. In 1982, appointed lecturer at the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
In 1991, awarded the Art Prize of the C.H. Ernst Foundation in Winterthur; in 2016, the Art Prize of Zollikon/Zurich; and in 2021, the Swiss Music Prize.
Concerts have taken him to all the major European centres, to Moscow, Estonia, Georgia, Japan and regularly to the Middle East, South America and India, as well as to Australia – previously mainly with ‘Ensemble 415’ and London Baroque, and now with the recorder ensemble ‘diferencias’ and ‘Melpomen’.
From 1976 to 2015, he collaborated with Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Zurich Opera and with his ‘Concentus Musicus’, performing music by Monteverdi, Mozart and Beethoven (Symphony No. 5). Numerous recordings, most recently on DIVOX: ‘Echo’, ‘Giorno e Notte’ (Vivaldi’s recorder concertos) and on Musiques Suisses SWISS MADE with ‘diferencias’. Initiator and organiser of the International Recorder Days (Switzerland–Eastern Europe Encounter 1993; Encounter with Italy 1997 ‘incontro’ and with the Arab world in September 2001 with ‘Jadal’ in Basel and Cairo).
As an aulos player, he demonstrates a unique commitment to the music of Ancient Greece. With his ensemble ‘Melpomen’, he has so far developed five programmes featuring his own reinterpretations of music from the 5th and 6th centuries BC.
